This workshop-based course prepares students to inventory, describe, and present archival materials as exhibits. It covers the basic principles of archival description, the identification of the formal and material characteristics of archival items, and the assessment of their value as historical sources and educational resources. Particular attention is paid to parchment documents, medieval manuscripts, and detached seals.
Students learn to prepare inventory descriptions, exhibition catalogue entries, and display case labels, taking into account the specific characteristics of the items and the needs of the audience. Practical exercises include selecting archival materials for an exhibition theme and developing a concept for their presentation. The course also addresses basic requirements for storage, safe handling, access, and display, as well as preventive conservation. It fosters responsibility for cultural heritage, teamwork, and accuracy in communicating historical knowledge to the public.

Assessment criteria
Course requirements
- Attendance in class; one unexcused absence is permitted.
- Active participation in class.
- Presentation of an assigned reading and preparation of a reading summary.
- Preparation of an inventory description, an exhibition catalogue entry, and a display case label for each of the following: a parchment document, a medieval manuscript, and a detached seal.
