The lecture will present the history of Poland from 1945 until the political changes in 1989 and the beginning of the transformation of the system of power. Issues will be discussed: The background to the formation of the Provisional Government of National Unity; Parties and partisans and illegal organisations, Referendum and elections; The rise of the PZPR. Economic affairs, culture; Full-blown Stalinism; Attitude to the Church and the crisis of the system; October 1956 and its aftermath; Relations with the Church during the rule of Władysław Gomułka; Political tensions and crises; December 1970 and the beginning of the rule of Edward Gierek; The June crisis of 1976 and the development of the political opposition; The political thaw - 1980; The Solidarity period; Martial law and its aftermath; Attempts at renewal and the beginning of the transformation of the system.
