The aim of the course “History of Christian Culture and Art in the Middle Ages” is to present undergraduate students with the development of Christian culture in Europe from the early to the late Middle Ages. The course highlights the role of Christianity as a fundamental factor shaping the religious, social, and intellectual life of the period, as well as its influence on artistic expression.
The classes cover the main areas of medieval Christian culture, including sacred art, Romanesque and Gothic architecture, painting, sculpture, and manuscript illumination. Particular attention is given to the function of artworks within religious space and their theological and symbolic significance. The course also addresses key developments in Christian thought and theology and their impact on the formation of medieval intellectual culture.
An important aspect of the course is the relationship between Christian culture and everyday life in medieval society, including the role of the Church as a patron of the arts and a center of spiritual life. Students are introduced to selected visual, textual, and material sources, learning how to interpret them in their historical and religious context. The course develops skills in analyzing cultural phenomena in their interconnections and in understanding the Middle Ages as a culturally unified yet regionally and socially diverse period.
