The course “Editing Historical Sources” is designed to introduce students to both the theory and practice of editing historical and archival documents. It focuses on the editor’s workshop, methodological principles of source publication, and the evolution of editorial standards applied to sources from different historical periods. the working methods and tools of a historical source editor (T_1), Students also engage with broader methodological discussions in the field, including contributions by scholars such as Stefan Kieniewicz and Henryk Markiewicz, as well as reflections on archival practice and editorial theory represented by Józef Dunin. The course highlights contemporary challenges in source editing, including the institutional role of archives, the relatively limited group of professional editors, and the low academic recognition of source editions outside grant-funded systems. In this context, it also addresses the current state of archival source editing and its importance for historical scholarship. The practical component of the course develops students’ skills in critically analyzing, interpreting, and preparing historical texts for scholarly publication in accordance with established editorial standards. |
