Research methods for History HIS-SM>methist
of historical research. The program focuses on the analysis of research models used in historiography, the basic concepts and tools of the historian’s craft, and the role of non-source-based knowledge in interpreting the past. Particular attention is paid to the status of historiography as a scholarly discipline and to the evolution of its subject matter and the social functions of historians throughout history, from antiquity to contemporary historiography.
The classes are interdisciplinary in nature and include reflection on modern ways of thinking about history, taking into account major developments in contemporary humanities. They discuss, among others, narrative philosophy of history, the ethical turn, and the audiovisual turn, which have redefined ways of describing and understanding the past. An important component of the course is also an introduction to digital humanities, including the use of computational tools in historical research (data analysis, digitization of sources, databases, visualization of historical knowledge), as well as reflection on the role of artificial intelligence in historical work (e.g. source analysis support, natural language processing, and critical evaluation of algorithms and their influence on historical interpretation).
An important element of the course is also the analysis of the achievements of the Polish school of historical methodology, with particular emphasis on the concepts of Jerzy Topolski, as well as the reflections of French historiography represented by François Hartog and Pierre Nora.
The aim of the course is to develop critical thinking about history as an academic discipline, to build the ability to analyze different methodological approaches, and to prepare students for independent reflection on methods of researching and interpreting the past—both in its classical forms and with the use of the latest digital tools.
