How to brew your own beer in a historical style?
The intention of the project course is to familiarise students with the cultural role of beer in history, as well as the practical side of the issue - introducing students to the world of home brewing.
The course includes the following parts:
1. lectures on the history of brewing - students will be introduced to the history of beer and brewing from prehistory to modern times, with particular emphasis on the traditions of the Polish lands. The lectures will also cover such topics as: brewing tourism, division into styles and types of beer, historical styles and genres.
2. brewing a selected beer - in the Laboratory of the History of Material Culture students will brew a beer of their own choice (ATTENTION - in groups of max. 5 people), participating in all stages: brewing, fermentation, lagering and bottling. Everyone will receive approximately 10 bottles of their own brewed, bottled and labelled beer.
3. field visits to selected breweries - the class will include visits to breweries of varying sizes (restaurant, kraft, medium-sized regional brewery), depending on current opportunities in arranging the visit.

Learning outcomes
- The student obtains a general orientation on the subject and knows the basic facts.
- The student is to be able to draw conclusions independently, to handle source material, to work on it independently
- Students should be able to work independently, be critical in drawing conclusions, be ready to deepen their knowledge.
Assessment criteria
lecture, class participation and preparation of a group presentation on a selected beer style - its history and present, combined with presentation of own brewing experience, sensory evaluation.
