Images of Christ and styles of spirituality LIC-S>24/25-Z-9
The course will focus on the following topics:
1.Christ as God (Dehumanized) – Images of Christ emphasizing His divinity while downplaying the significance of the incarnation.
2. Jesus as (Only) a Man – Images of Christ highlighting the humanity of Jesus of Nazareth, neglecting His divinity.
3. Christ as Sage and Master of Virtue – Jesus as a teacher of morality and the ideal of holiness.
4. Jesus the Reformer – Jesus as a model reformer of religious structures, a liberator, and a social activist.
5. Christ the Bridegroom – Images of Jesus in selected aspects of Christian mysticism.
6. Christ the Healer and Psychologist – Images of Jesus in selected works at the intersection of psychology and spirituality.
7. "Cosmic Christ" – Images of Christ in the New Age movement and selected non-Christian religions.

Learning outcomes
After completing the course and confirming the learning outcomes, the student will:
• Be able to present several distinct characteristic images of Christ present in the history of Christian spirituality and thought.
• Understand the relationship between the adopted image of Christ and the specific style of spirituality practiced by believers.
• Be able to reflect on works in theology, philosophy, spirituality, or art with a Christological theme, identifying the specific characteristics of the depicted image of Christ and the associated spirituality.
Assessment criteria
Methods:
– Lectures with multimedia presentations
– Discussions on the presented topics and selected excerpts from theological texts
Evaluation Criteria:
Two forms of knowledge verification are available:
– Written form – A short scholarly essay (3-4 pages) analyzing a selected text, work of art, composition, or film depicting a specific image of Christ, along with a reflection on the possible relationship between that image of Christ and a particular style of spirituality.
– Oral form – A discussion on one of the eight topics presented during the course (the oral form is available only under special circumstances, with prior agreement from the instructor).
