Family policy is the practical dimension of government policy and refers to those activities of the government which are directed towards the people who make up the family and, in particular, such state policy which aims to influence the situation of families or individuals in their family roles. It is, therefore, the totality of legal norms, actions and measures activated by the state in order to create appropriate living conditions for the family; its formation, proper functioning and the fulfilment by it of all socially important roles.
The most commonly recognised object of family policy is the family with children. It is considered that the definition of family used for social policy purposes should be broad enough to encompass a variety of types, structures, roles and relationships. It usually refers to at least one adult and one child.
The conceptual framework for family policy strategies, understood as systemic, family-oriented public action, is indicated in the following areas: law, services, especially health care and finance.
