Getting to know the content, theological message and exegesis of the most important fragments of the historical books of the OT: Joshua, Judges, Ruth, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Ezra, Nehemiah, Tobias, Judith, Esther, 1-2 Maccabees.
Getting acquainted with the difficult and long process of conquering the Promised Land (Joshua) and the main problems of national identity (Judge). Israel’s entry into the monarchical system and difficulties associated with the rule of the first kings (1-2 Sam; 1-2 Kings and 1-2 Chronicles). The drama of the division of the nation into two kingdoms and its consequences. Return to the land from exile and the religious and social reforms of Ezra and Nehemiah. Books of Ruth and presentation of David’s dynasty. The Book of Tobit as a model of family and religious life (protection of the archangel Raphael and the victory over the demon Asmodeus). The role of Judith’s victory and Esther’s attitude as women saving the chosen people from catastrophe.

Learning outcomes
Knowledge of the OT Deuteronomic tradition and the biblical history of Israel from the entry into Canaan to the inter-testament times. The ability to present of the content of individual historical books of the OT and their theological message. Competent use of the content of these books as part of the catechetical program.
Assessment criteria
- Writing an exegetical work from ST historical books = 30% of the final grade value; - Class attendance = 20% of the final grade (one unexcused absence = minus 5%); - Final oral examination = 50% of the final grade (thesis): - Deuteronomic work, - The content of the book of Joshua and the characteristics of the settlement of the tribes of Israel - Exegesis Joshua 3; 5 and 10, - Judges and book structure, - Deborah's Song and Samson narrative, - The calling and importance of Samuel, - The importance of the monarchy in Israel, - The King as the "anointed" of YHWH, - The division of the kingdom, its causes and effects, - The history of the kings Saul, David and Solomon, - The kings of Judah and Israel and the evaluation of their conduct, - Josiah's reform - Reforms of Ezra and Nehemiah, - Literary issues and theological message of historical and didactic books: Ruth, Judith, Tobias and Esther, - The struggle for national and religious identity in the Maccabean era.
Practical placement
The total student workload is about 60 hours, which corresponds to 2 ECTS points.
The detailed student workload for the lecture is as follows:
- Participation in lectures – 30 hours;
- Participation in exercises – 15 hours;
- Reading and understanding the historical books of the OT and preparation of a written work – 12 hours;
- Revision and consolidation of the material before the final oral exam – 3 hours.
