Ethical Thought from Antiquity to the Era of Enlightenment FIL-ENG-SM>EthW
During the course basic ethical thought of selected philosophers will be presented. We will discuss the most important ethical issues raised by them and the echo of past debates in contemporary discussions in public life
1. The birth of ethics: Homer, Hesiod, ethics of a citizen of polis.
2. Ethics before Socrates: Pythagoras, Heraclitus, Empedocles, Democritus.
3. Sophists: Protagoras, Gorgias, Hippias.
4. Ethical intellectualism of Socrates.
5. Plato's ethical idealism.
6. Aristotle's perfectionist eudaemonism.
7. Ethics of Epicureans and Hedonists.
8. Stoics ethics.Ethics in Rome.
9. The birth of Christian ethics - the Old and New Testament, Jesus of Nazareth, the ethics of the first Christians.
10. Ethical thought of Saint. Augustine of Hippo.
11. Medieval Christian ethical thought
12. Ethical views of Saint. Thomas Aquinas.
13. N. Machiavelli, Renesissance ethics in Poland, Hobbit's Ethical egoism.
14. British empirism, Locke, Shaftesbury, De Mandeville, Butler, Hume's critique of the foundations of ethics.
15. Descartes' ethics, Spinoza Ethics, Ethics J.J. Rousseau.
Expected student's average workload:
Participation in the lectures - 30 hours
Consultation meetings 15 hours
Preparing for the final exam - 60 hours

After finishing the subject student:
F2aK_W05 - deeply understands views of selected moral philosophers
F2aK_W07 - knows the historical development of the most important ideas in ethics
F2aK_W08 - is skilled in identifying and analyzing philosophical problems in the field of ethics
F2aK_U12 - reconstructs and constructs the argumentation form the perspective of different ethical schools, on the basis of ways of argumentation typical to them and noticing the differences and similarities between them
F2aK_U13 puts and analyzes hypotheses in the field of ethics
F2aK_K02 shows openness to new ideas and readiness to change his/her opinion in the light of new facts and arguments
F2aK_K03 on the basis of genuine analysis of he current situation prepares possible solutions
Kryteria oceniania
Oral exam in the examination session, the date of which will be set 2 weeks before the final meeting. During the exam students will receive three questions in the field of knowledge provided by the teacher during lectures. The purpose of the questions will be to check to what extent the student has achieved the assumed learning outcomes. The result of the exam will determine the final grade.
Example of the exam question: What is the happiness according to Aristotle and how to achieve it?
